“Spotlight on...” Visiting Research Stay

GIGA Doctoral Researcher Olena Osypenkova is about to complete her eight-week Visiting Research Stay at The University of Cambridge, where she is working on her dissertation project “The Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation Towards the Middle East and North Africa Through a Strategic Culture Lens: Context, Rationale, Strategies.” Learn more about Lena’s experience in this interview:

  • Why did you want to do a visiting stay at a different institution?

While the University of Cambridge's rich academic tradition was the source of inspiration, my decision to spend a research stay here was driven by something more specific. I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to immerse myself in an environment, where distinguished scholars delve deeply into the complexities of geopolitical affairs, many of which closely mirror the themes central to my own research. I was also curious how the same questions are approached from a different perspective, hoping that this shift would both broaden and deepen my understanding. What does a typical day look like during your visiting stay?

Well, there was no such thing as a "typical" day during my time in Cambridge - each day unfolded differently. Some days were filled with insightful meetings with colleagues from various departments, as well as participation in open talks and thought-provoking discussions. On other days, I enjoyed spending countless hours exploring the University Library's vast collections. I found some important primary sources that had previously seemed unreachable. While balancing between moments of intensity and quiet reflection from time to time, I allowed some space for the spiritual and cultural enrichment attending organ recitals and Evensongs at the colleges’ chapels, listening to orchestra concerts, visiting film events, museums and galleries. What do you take away from your stay and how did it impact your work?

I would say that I am leaving with a sense of renewed clarity and understanding, not only in relation to my research, but also regarding the broader context in which it is situated. What advice would you give someone who wants to do a visiting stay?

I would strongly encourage my fellows to pursue a visiting stay. My key piece of advice is to be clear about what you hope to gain from it. Prepare thoroughly: whether it’s booking time slots at the archives or reaching out in advance to people you’d like to meet and work with, or packing essential medications, the practical details matter more than one might think. At the same time, try not to limit yourself with rigid expectations. Remain open to new experiences. It is often that in this openness that the real magic of a research stay often happens. And I am profoundly grateful to GIGA and DAAD for making this enriching experience possible for me!

    GIGA Doctoral Programme

The GIGA has a long tradition of integrating young scholars into its research matrix. This culminated in the establishment of the GIGA Doctoral Programme, which seeks to provide a platform for both German and international early-career academics. Herewith they can pursue continued professional development and their own research, particularly in the field of Comparative Area Studies.
